Have a FitBit? How about a smartphone? If you answered yes to either (maybe both?) of those questions, you could be missing out on some easy money.
With the invention of fitness trackers, a whole array of apps has come out that reward you for being active. While the apps vary slightly in how they work and what fitness trackers they sync with, they all share the same fundamental goal: rewarding you for doing simple things like walking, running, riding a bike, etc.
So now that you know that you could be making money just by doing something as easy as walking, let's get to the reason you're here: the ultimate list of apps that pay you to exercise!
HealthyWage is an app that allows you to win money by completing challenges such as increasing your average daily steps or losing weight.
It works by having you put money on the line and then giving you a specific goal such as increasing your daily steps by 25%. If you achieve your goal, you win money, if not, you lose whatever money you've put up.
In order to automatically track your progress, HealthyWage works with both Fitbit and Jawbone devices. If all you have is a smartphone, you can just install either corresponding app (I recommend the Jawbone Up app as it does a great job of automatically counting your steps).
They also give you the option of manually entering your steps, etc. though that increases your chances to be audited to ensure no one is trying to cheat.
You can win a lot of money with HealthyWage (up to $10,000) if you successfully complete one of their weight loss challenges as the average prize is $1,331!
StepBet allows you to win money by completing a certain number of steps each day. Before you join a game (i.e. put money on the line), you're shown your two step goals: active and stretch.
In order to not lose your money (and possibly win money), you need to meet your active day goal four days a week and your stretch day goal twice a week.
Both of the goals are based on your personal step history which means if you already walk a lot, your goals may be really high. On the other hand, if you don't walk much, your goals will probably be pretty low.
For the game I'm playing right now, my active goal is 7,405 steps a day and my stretch goal is 9,438.
Each game usually costs $40 to join and lasts six weeks. Those that complete their goals each week split the pot (after StepBet takes their cut) so basically those that lose pay those that win.
As with HealthyWage, StepBet also guarantees that as long as you successfully complete your game, you won't lose money, though there is no guarantee that you will win money either as it depends on how many people drop out.
Achievement is an app for both Android and iOS that allows you to earn money for doing simple things like walking, filling out health surveys, weighing yourself, etc.
It works with a ton of apps such as Fitbit, Garmin, iHealth, Misfit, Moves, Jawbone UP, Strava, and MyFitnessPal.
It's disappointing though that it doesn't currently work with Google Fit as that's one of my favorite activity tracking apps. Hopefully, one day soon they will add it but currently you'll just have to use one of the other supported apps (I recommend Jawbone UP).
Achievement keeps it super simple when it comes to rewards: Once you hit 10,000 points you can redeem them for $10.
It doesn't get much simpler than that.
Sweatcoin is only for Android and allows you to earn rewards for walking. The offers are very few currently with the most attractive one being a $5 Amazon gift card, though you can only earn that through inviting others to join.
Some of the offers that don't require inviting others to join include Nike gift cards, and a Fitbit Flex.
As for the reliability of it's step counter, it leaves a lot to be desired. Don't expect Sweatcoin's step count to be anywhere close to Google Fit's or most other major step counters.
I think it would be a lot better if they just allowed you to sync with one of the major fitness tracker apps rather than relying on their own step counter which doesn't seem to be very accurate.
DietBet is from WayBetter, the same company that developed StepBet and as you may have guessed, it involves losing weight.
While it doesn't automatically track your weight loss through a device such as a Fitbit, it still allows you to win money if you meet your target weight loss goal.
In order to keep track of your weight loss, DietBet requires you to either submit videos (for games over $100) or pictures of your weigh-ins in order to try to prevent cheating.
Another app from Waybetter, RunBet is currently in beta and as you guessed, it involves meeting running goals.
It's currently only for Apple so Android users will have to wait to use it which might not be a bad thing considering it's in beta anyway.
Bitwalking is a pretty interesting app that has a cool premise and a lot of promise.
Instead of just giving you points towards gift cards like many of these types of apps, Bitwalking gives you Walking Dollars (W$) which is a digital currency similar to Bitcoin (though currently nowhere as valuable).
While Bitwalking holds a lot of promise, that's pretty much all it is at this point as you can't use Walking Dollars to buy anything yet, at least that I know of.
If you click on the "Store" link in the app, you'll see a statement saying that the Bitwalking store is coming along with some services you might like to spend your W$ on such as Netflix, Spotify, etc.
The best feature they could implement would be to be able to buy/sell Walking Dollars but like the Store link, when you click on the "Buy/Sell W$" link, it tells you that it isn't available in your country yet (at least that's what appears to users in the U.S.).
While Bitwalking seems to be pretty useless right now, I'm holding out hope that one day soon they'll start allowing us to buy/sell W$ or at least get Amazon gift cards with them.
In the mean time, if you choose to download the app, you can start accumulating W$ in case they ever become worth anything.
Walking Money is another app for Android that pays you to walk. While any app that pays me for something I do anyway is a win in my book, Walking Money does have numerous issues that make it far from the best of these types of apps.
First of all, this is another app that doesn't sync to one of the major fitness trackers like Google Fit, but instead does its own tracking of your steps.
The step counter is not accurate at all, but unlike other apps where the count isn't accurate, this one is way too generous with its steps.
Moving your phone even slightly will usually result in "steps" being counted. While I'm not complaining, if I were the app developer I would seriously fix this as it's less of a step counting app and more of a "has your phone moved even a centimeter?" app.
The other issue with this app is that it's written in Spanish and while there is an English option, it doesn't seem to work, at least not for me.
While this isn't a huge deal as the app is pretty basic and it's easy to guess what things mean, it would still be nice if the English option actually worked.
While both of these issues are annoying, they aren't deal breakers for me as again, it's an app that pays you to walk, at least in theory.
bounts (yes, lowercase b) is another app that syncs to a variety of major fitness trackers such as Jawbone UP, Google Fit, Fitbit, etc.
It allows you to earn points, called "bounts" (big surprise), by doing various activities such as walking as well as competing in challenges like 10 minute step challenges where your goal is to get the most steps in 10 minutes.
The differentiating thing about bounts seems to be the social aspect of it as it's main feature is social challenges where you compete with other users.
The biggest disappointment is definetely the rewards. Currently, I'm only shown two rewards to choose from, a Nike hoodie with a bounts logo on the sleeve, and a Misfit fitness tracker that's currently out of stock.
While only having two rewards to choose from is already pretty bad, it appears that both require you to exchange points and actual money to get the reward!
I'm sorry, but what's the point of the app if all you get is maybe a slight discount on only two products? That's a pretty bad incentive if you ask me.
On the plus side, it's a really nice looking app that seems like a good amount of time has gone into it's development. It's just too bad the rewards are lacking so very much.
If you live in the U.K. you may have better luck with the rewards as I think it's a U.K. based app so maybe the store offers more/better rewards across the pond, though I have no way of knowing for sure.
If you shop at Walgreens at all, you may as well download their app as they give you Balance Rewards points just for being active.
If you're not familiar with Balance Rewards points, they are used for discounts both in-store as well as online.
For every $1 you spend at Walgreens you get 10 Balance Rewards points. Once you reach 1,000 points, you get a free $1 to spend at Walgreens.
I've only recently downloaded/synced the app and I already have earned a $1 reward.
If you ever shop at Walgreens, I highly recommend downloading their app and syncing it to your activity tracker as the points add up pretty quickly.
Dick's Sporting Goods also has an app that rewards you for walking or running. You get 50 Scorecard points just for signing up and once you reach 300 points, you get a free $10 to spend at Dick's.
This app is best for those that are active as you only gain points if you either walk 10,000 steps or run three miles in a 24 hour period. If you meet the goal you get three points, otherwise you get none.
Also, the app only syncs with three fitness trackers: Map My Run, Fitbit, and Garmin.
Higi allows you to win prizes by participating in fitness challenges.
Currently, you can sync 16 different activity trackers in order to gain what they call watts which are points that allow you to enter into sweepstakes for prizes.
In addition to exercising, you can also earn watts by getting your blood pressure and/or weight checked at a Higi station (located in various stores like Rite Aid and Sam's Club).
While no prizes are guaranteed, Higi could be good for someone that enjoys sweepstakes and exercising.
WeFitter seems to be one of the few Fitbit reward apps for those living in Europe. A lot of their rewards are in Euros and for European shops/services.
If you live in Europe, it might be worth trying out but for those of us in the U.S. the rewards are lacking since we can't really use a lot of them.
On the plus side, points seem to be pretty easy to get. After only about one day, I already have over 800 points.
Also, WeFitter seems to unlock rewards depending on what group you're part of so if you do try it out, it may be beneficial to try to join one or more of the groups listed in the app.
Believe it or not but AARP offers members points for walking. In case you don't know what AARP is, it's a membership organization for senior citizens in the U.S.
Since I'm not a senior, I can't speak to how the program works but if you are a senior, it's probably worth checking out, especially if you already own a Fitbit as that seems to be the major fitness tracker they use.
As you might have guessed, this app is different from the rest. Instead of making money for yourself, your physical fitness can earn money for a charity of your choice (from among the charities they work with).
I love the idea behind this app along with the large selection of charities to choose from.
The only critique I have is that you have to click within the app to start tracking your activity instead of it being tracked in the background like most others.
If you can get into the habit of opening the app and choosing your activity to track, it's worth downloading if you like the idea of giving something back while you exercise.
This is a U.K. based app so it might be more useful for those that live there but even so, I enjoy the design/reliability of this app.
It syncs with a varity of fitness trackers like Jawbone UP, Google Fit, RunKeeper, etc. and the points seem to be fairly easy to acquire.
Like some of the other apps in this list though, the rewards aren't that attractive, at least to me. Instead of gift cards or Paypal, almost all of the rewards are just discounts on various items.
If you are really into exercise/healthy living you might love this app though as all of their rewards are focused on that such as health foods, excersise products, etc.
For me personally, I'd much rather just have cash or an Amazon gift card. Overall though, I may keep it on my phone just in the off chance that a reward I really want might show up eventually.
LEAP4LIFE is a website that rewards you with gift cards for completing various fitness "events" like walking a set number of steps within a certain time frame.
100 points seems to be equal to $1 so once you acquire 2,500 points you can request a $25 gift card, 5,000 points a $50 gift card, and so on.
While I love that you can get gift cards, the downside is that it only syncs with a limited number of activity trackers.
Currently, it looks like you must use either Fitbit, Jawbone, or the Moves app (in my experience one of the worst step counters out there).
They tell you on the site that if you don't have a fitness tracker to just download the Moves app but I can confirm that the Jawbone UP app for Android works with the site.
LEAP4LIFE is worth checking out if you like gift cards as it's one of the few apps on this list that offers them.
EveryMove is different than the above apps as it relies on your employer participating in order to earn rewards.
If your employer doesn't participate in their program (most don't), then the points you accumulate from doing physical activity are basically just for bragging rights.
If your employer does participate though then you have a chance to earn real rewards like gift cards or other incentives.
While most people won't earn anything by installing this app, those whose employers participate probably want to check it out as you might be able to earn some pretty good rewards.
This one's only for iPhone users as there is no Android app (at least not yet). Because I'm an Android user I can't use it but it looks promising.
They advertise that you can get money via PayPal just by running and their rating in the iTunes store is 3.5 stars which is decent.
